Chelsea forward João Félix has joined AC Milan on loan until the end of the season. The Italian club has paid a £5 million loan fee for the 25-year-old Portugal international, but there is no obligation to buy him in the summer.
Although the deal was officially announced yesterday, all necessary paperwork had been submitted before Monday’s Serie A and Premier League transfer deadline.
Félix originally signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea when he completed a £45 million permanent move to the club in August.
He had spent the second half of the 2022-23 season on loan at Stamford Bridge. His transfer came under unusual circumstances, as Chelsea and Atlético Madrid effectively swapped players—academy graduate Conor Gallagher moved to Spain in a £33 million deal.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s attempt to sign Atlético striker Samu Omorodion fell through. The Félix loan deal appears to have helped Atlético secure the funds needed to finalise the Gallagher transfer.
Despite being part of Chelsea’s squad this season, Félix has only started three Premier League matches, though he has been a regular in cup competitions, scoring seven goals.
The forward began his career at Benfica before moving to Atlético Madrid for £113 million in July 2019—a fee that, at the time, made him the fifth-most expensive player in football history.
He spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Barcelona before returning to Chelsea last summer.
