Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Lilian Afegbai, recently took to Instagram to express her frustration over the increasing divide within the Nigerian film industry.
She sheds light on a concerning trend where creatives are unfairly categorised based on the platforms showcasing their work, such as YouTube, Netflix, or Amazon.
Lilian Afegbai’s candid remarks have sparked widespread discussion about an issue that has long lingered in Nollywood but rarely receives open acknowledgment.
In her impassioned post, Lilian Afegbai criticised the growing tendency within the industry and among audiences to label filmmakers and actors based on the distribution platform of their work.
This practice, she argued, has created an unnecessary hierarchy that diminished the contributions of those associated with platforms like YouTube while elevating those connected to global streaming giants like Netflix or Amazon.
“Normally, an actor is an actor. It’s about, are you a good actor? Can you act? But it’s you viewers that have turned the whole thing upside down,” Afegbai remarked.
