Nigerian comedian and filmmaker AY Makun has achieved another milestone with his latest film, The Waiter, which has grossed over ₦300 million at the Nigerian box office.
As of January 15, 2025, the action-comedy film has earned an impressive ₦305.1 million, solidifying its status as one of Nollywood’s standout successes.
In its fourth week of release, The Waiter added ₦26.6 million to its earnings, maintaining strong momentum despite competition from other blockbusters.
Released on December 20, 2024, the film quickly captured audience attention, surpassing ₦200 million within its first two weeks. By early January, it had grossed ₦218.6 million.
The Waiter now joins the ranks of Nollywood’s highest-grossing films, standing alongside titles like Alakada: Bad and Boujee by Toyin Abraham, which premiered on the same day, and the record-breaking Everybody Loves Jenifa, which has earned over ₦1.6 billion.
The film follows Akpos, played by AY Makun, a man down on his luck who lands a temporary job as a waiter at the upscale Crystal Hotel.
His life takes an unexpected turn during a high-profile event hosted by the Minister of Poverty Alleviation, where a scheme to aid the underprivileged is unveiled.
Through a clever mix of humour, action, and poignant moments, The Waiter delivers a captivating story that has resonated deeply with audiences.
