Statistician-General Urges Media, CSOs To Prioritise Objectivity In Reporting NBS Data

In Keffi, the Statistician-General, Adeyemi Adeniran, called on media and civil society organisations (CSOs) to ensure objectivity in reporting data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

Speaking at a retreat, he highlighted the media’s role in accurate, transparent communication and reaffirmed the NBS’s commitment to continued collaboration for national development.

At a retreat in Keffi, Nasarawa State, the Statistician-General of the Federation, Adeyemi Adeniran, called on journalists and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to report data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) with objectivity and patriotism.

Representing Director of Agriculture and Business Statistics, Adeniran, Biyi Fafunmi, stressed the crucial role the media and CSOs play in ensuring the public receives accurate and unbiased information.

He explained that the media and CSOs bridge the gap between statistical agencies and the public, thus enhancing the credibility of national statistics and empowering citizens to make informed decisions.

Effective Use Of Statistical Data

“You are essential partners in national development,” Adeniran stated.

“By promoting understanding and accountability, you make statistics more relevant and trustworthy.”

The retreat was held to equip journalists and CSOs with the skills needed to effectively communicate statistics.

Furthermore, Adeniran emphasised that, as the media landscape and technology evolve, collaboration between the NBS, the media, and civil society must continue to ensure the effective use of statistical data in national planning and development.

In addition, Director of Communication and Public Relations at NBS, Sunday Ichedi, highlighted the importance of accurate reporting.

He further pledged the NBS’s ongoing support to help the media and CSOs navigate complex statistical issues.

“Accurate reporting fosters transparency, accountability, and evidence-based decision-making in Nigeria,” Ichedi said, reinforcing the NBS’s commitment to collaboration.

Finally, the event highlighted the vital role of journalists and CSOs in shaping public understanding of statistics and strengthening the partnership between the NBS, the media, and civil society.
