Scott McTominay has revealed the details of his final chat with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United before moving to Serie A side Napoli.
Manchester United sold McTominay to Napoli in August in a deal worth €30 million (£25.4m/$33.6m), ending the midfielder’s 22-year stay at the club.
Erik ten Hag was manager at the time and made it clear he didn’t want the Scotland international to depart.
However, the deal went ahead and McTominay made the switch to Italy, not least because of Financial Fair Play rules, with the transfer going through as pure profit due to the midfielder’s status as a homegrown player.
McTominay has quickly impressed with the Serie A side.
He has been a regular in the starting XI and contributed three goals and two assists to help Antonio Conte’s side into second place in the table.
The Scot has now opened on his transfer to Napoli and revealed what he said to Ten Hag before departing Old Trafford.
What McTominay Said
He told BBC Scotland: “On my last day, I had to go and see everyone and it was not easy to say goodbye.
“But that’s football. That’s the life.
“I spoke to him [Ten Hag].
“He expressed his thoughts on the situation.
“I said, ‘listen it’s my career, I am here to push myself on’.
“In this situation, I have to look out for number one and go with my gut feeling of what I want to do in my career and not be held back by any other external factors.
“It was amicable. I love that football club to bits, they have been my life for 22 years, but I have moved on now.
“I am thoroughly enjoying myself here.”
McTominay added on why he made such a huge career call: “It was a big decision, but in some ways it was quite straightforward.
“However, I saw the passionate fans, I saw the coach, I saw the players and I saw an opportunity.
“I took it. I didn’t look back.
“It didn’t take me long to make the decision because I knew that was what I wanted and I’ll never have any regrets in my life.
“As soon as I put my mind to something I want to do it, that’s it. There’s no holding me back.”

However, McTominay won FA Cup and League Cup trophies with United and will be hoping to add more silverware to his collection at Napoli.
Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim has since replaced Ten Hag in the United dugout with the aim of trying to get the club to challenge for the biggest trophies once again.
