Liam Payne’s family has expressed heartbreak at the tragic death of the former One Direction member on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
In a statement shared with the BBC on Thursday October 17, 2024, the family said, “We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts, and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny, and brave soul.”
“We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time.”
Liam Payne, died after falling from the third floor balcony of his hotel bedroom in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The incident occurred after a hotel manager reported an “aggressive man” causing damage to a room.
While the cause of death will be determined by a yet to be conducted autopsy, the singer has been candid about his mental struggles, disclosing in a 2017 interview that he battled both depression and suicidal thoughts.
Tributes have poured in from fans and celebrities alike since the singer’s death, with producer Zedd tweeting, “RIP Liam… I can’t believe this is real… absolutely heartbreaking,” while rapper Flavor Flav mourned the loss, stating Payne died “much too young.” Fans have also assembled at the hotel to lay flowers.
Liam Payne gained global fame as a member of One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, and Louis Tomlinson.
The group achieved major chart success with six top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits and four No. 1 albums. He subsequently embarked on a successful solo career.
Payne is survived by his 7-year-old son, Bear.
