NITDA Calls For Africa’s Inclusion In The Global Conversation On AI Regulation

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is calling for Africa to play a key role in shaping the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

At Nigeria Fintech Week, Director General Kashifu Inuwa emphasised the importance of Africa’s involvement in global AI regulation.

With AI projected to contribute $2.9 trillion to Africa’s GDP by 2030, he urged for governance that reflects the continent’s unique contexts to ensure equitable outcomes.

NITDA is urging Africa to actively participate in global AI regulation.

At Nigeria Fintech Week, NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa, called AI a “paradigm shift” that can transform key sectors like healthcare and education.

The International Monetary Fund calls AI a technological revolution that could boost productivity and add $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030.

Similarly, Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, echoed this sentiment, asserting that Nigeria should lead in AI development.

Likewise, Oremeyi Akah, Chief Customer Experience Officer at Interswitch, emphasized the need for regulations that deliver solutions tailored to Africa’s needs.

Moreover, Inuwa pointed out issues like algorithmic bias in AI decision-making, highlighting the necessity of Africa’s participation to combat inequalities.

To strengthen its role in AI regulation, Inuwa advocated for investing in local talent and fostering homegrown innovations.

Finally, he urged collaboration among African nations and organizations like the African Union to amplify Africa’s voice in global AI governance, ensuring technology serves all humanity equitably.
