#EndBadGovernanceProtest Day 1: Why Mobile Networks Are Down On Protest Day

“Could it be the protest?” many people cannot help but whisper behind their keypads.

For weeks, Nigerians called for a mass protest.

This protest, tagged #EndBadGovernanceProtest aims at conveying the anger of Nigerians to the government.

Hunger Protest

This protest, against hunger and hardship, kicked off on Thursday, August 1.

Before the protest date, something happened.

MTN and other mobile network providers blocked the phone numbers of millions of Nigerians.

Many Nigerians had hurriedly linked the blockage to the protest.

To them, it was part of the government’s ploy to discourage protesters.

After days of outrage, the telecom companies were ordered to unblock the blocked SIM cards.

Now, the protest day is here, and many Nigerians, especially MTN users are experiencing bad network service.

It did not take time for many people to connect the dots.

To them, the poor service is connected to the ongoing protest.

However, there are other reasons why the mobile networks may be down.

Let’s explore them.

Poor Network

Don’t forget about the attack on an MTN facility in Lagos.

This attack had left the telecommunication no choice but to shut down for days over fear of attacks.
