Agunloye served as minister of power and steel under former President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2003.

Accusation

Obasanjo had earlier accused Agunloye of mismanaging the power project.

He had, at the time, asked Agunloye to inform Nigerians how he got approval to award a $6 billion contract to Sunrise Power and Transmission Ltd. without the Federal Executive Council (FEC). The project was consummated in 2003.

He also claimed that the government was not mandated to pay a kobo to Sunrise under the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) agreement.

According to him, it was to be fully funded by the newly registered company. Also, he said the company’s declared assets were worth less than $2,000 at the time.

In 2016, Agunloye joined the Social Democratic Party and became the party’s candidate in the state governorship election.
