In a night filled with emotion and triumph, Hollywood star, Zoe Saldaña, secured her first-ever Academy Award, winning Best Supporting Actress for her powerful portrayal in Emilia Pérez.
The victory crowns an already remarkable awards season for the Dominican-American actress, who has previously clinched prestigious honours at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Critics Choice Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
With tears in her eyes, Zoe Saldaña took to the stage, she calls out in heartfelt excitement, “Mami! Mami!” as she acknowledged the presence of her mother and family in the audience.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, she said:
“I am floored by this honour. Thank you to the Academy for recognising the quiet heroism and the power in a woman like Rita. To my fellow nominees, the love and community you have offered me is a true gift, and I will pay it forward”.
The award was presented by last year’s winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who praised Saldaña’s fearless performance, stating:
“You took us on a journey—one that made us question the very limits we put on ourselves. And then you showed us exactly how to break them. You are fearless, and it is so inspiring to watch”.
This historic win is especially meaningful for Saldaña, who proudly highlightes her heritage and the significance of the moment.
“My grandmother came to this country in 1961. I am a proud child of immigrant parents, with dreams, dignity, and hardworking hands. I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and I know I will not be the last.”
She was part of an impressive line-up of first-time nominees, including Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Ariana Grande (Wicked), and Isabella Rossellini (Conclave).
