Music is one thing you cannot take away from a church gathering, but when it becomes boring, it could trigger some displeasure. This could be the situation that Nigerian singer, Seyi Shay, has found herself.
She says the music in her for former church was the real reason she stopped attending.

Sheyi Shay says the church is rooted in its rigid approach to worship music.
According to the artiste, church leaders insisted on singing only hymns and songs that were strictly scripture-based
In a candid post on Instagram, Seyi Shay shared her frustration with the church’s stance.
She noted that it played a major role in her exit.
Also, she criticised the idea that only hymns aligned with true worship, especially considering the historical background of some of those songs.
“One leader like dat at my former church said something like ‘we need to stop singing all these new age gospel songs in praise and worship and go back to singing hymns and only songs that are direct scripture…’ Guess what? I stopped going to that church. PERIODT,” she wrote.
She went further to highlight that many hymns commonly used in churches were written by slave owners
Slave owners who forced enslaved people to sing them even while enduring pain and torture.
“I don’t know how or why you would feel blessed and happy by singing some of the songs that slave owners wrote and forced them to sing… makes no sense. Do your research! Ignorance is NOT Godly!!!” she added.
Clarifying her position, the singer noted that not all hymns fell into this category.
