This year, as the world rallies under the banner “Beat Plastic Pollution,” the energy giant revealed it has slashed routine gas flaring by over 97%—a quiet but powerful move in a region often caught between industrial progress and environmental fragility.

Chevron Nigeria

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), which operates a joint venture with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, embraces this campaign by aligning it with its core commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.

Reducing Plastic Waste

CNL’s Chairman and Managing Director, Jim Swartz, explains, “We design, operate, and retire our assets responsibly, with the environment at the forefront of every decision.”

As a result, CNL reduces single-use plastics by installing water dispensers and deploying waste management equipment that shreds and compacts plastics for recycling.

Cutting Gas Flaring And Emissions

Moreover, the company slashed routine gas flaring by over 97% in the past decade by using advanced Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) cameras to detect and reduce methane emissions.

This achievement reflects the success of CNL’s Operational Excellence Management System, which consistently prioritises safety, efficiency, and environmental performance.

Protecting Biodiversity

Since 1992, CNL has partnered with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) to establish and maintain the Lekki Conservation Centre—a 78-hectare sanctuary that supports biodiversity and environmental education.

Investing In Conservation And Awareness

In addition, CNL funds PhD research scholarships in conservation and organises awareness initiatives like the S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture and Walk for Nature.

Driving Long-Term Change

CNL’s GM for Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Olusoga Oduselu, highlights, “For over 60 years, we’ve collaborated with communities, regulators, and conservationists to safeguard biodiversity and promote sustainable development.”

Leading By Example

Ultimately, as the world rallies to beat plastic pollution, Chevron Nigeria leads the charge with lasting, practical solutions.
