To help Nigerian universities compete on the global stage and curb frequent strikes, President Bola Tinubu announced increased funding for tertiary institutions.
Funding For Tertiary Institutions
Speaking at the 35th Convocation Ceremony of Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo, he outlined the government’s plans to upgrade key colleges into universities and strengthen collaboration with staff unions.
Engaging With University Staff
Firstly, speaking through the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Adebayo Bamire, Tinubu emphasised that his administration is actively engaging with university staff unions to reduce the frequent strikes that disrupt academic progress.
Upgrading Colleges To Universities
Moreover, a key part of the government’s strategy involves recently upgrading four Colleges of Education—including Adeyemi College of Education, Alvan Ikoku, and Federal Colleges of Education in Kano and Zaria—into Federal Universities of Education.
This upgrade creates more pathways for Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) holders to gain direct university admission.
Commending Leadership Amid Challenges
The President also praised AFUED’s leadership and staff for successfully managing the transition from a College of Education to a full university despite financial challenges.
