Singer Timaya has expressed concerns about the lack of genuine support and camaraderie among music industry colleagues.
In a recent interview, he highlighted that while many assume friendships exist within the industry, colleagues are not necessarily friends and should not be regarded as such.
According to Timaya, the only people who truly want one to succeed unconditionally are one’s parents.
Also, Timaya noted that some artists may either demand a fee to feature on a track or fail to show up for video shoots, behaviours he attributes to an increasingly competitive and transactional industry environment.
He compared the lack of goodwill in the Nigerian music industry to typical office dynamics, where competition often overshadows cooperation.
“Your colleagues are not your friends na. The only person who wants to see you better than them is your father o, your parents,” he said.
The singer added that rivalries and vindictive tendencies toward others who may have caused friction in the past also create tension within the industry.

He believes that, like major brands collaborating for mutual benefit, musicians could also benefit from seeing collaboration as a valuable form of promotion.
“If Adidas can collaborate with Gucci, then what are you talking about? Collaboration, I said it a long time ago, ‘collabo follow for promo,’” he stated.
