Viola Davis will be honoured by Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival, where the Oscar winner and four-time nominee will also lead a masterclass reflecting on her career.
Announced Monday, the festival’s fourth edition will take place from December 6 to 14 in Jeddah on the Red Sea’s eastern shore.
Opening the festival will be the world premiere of Egyptian director Karim Shenawy’s musical drama, The Tale of Daye’s Family.
This film follows the story of an 11-year-old Nubian albino with a remarkable singing talent who faces societal challenges due to his appearance, according to the festival’s synopsis.
“This film perfectly represents the direction this region is moving toward,” said Shivani Pandya Malhotra, the festival’s general manager, at a press conference, noting that the inspirational story is a joint production between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
A second highlight at the Red Sea gala will be Johnny Depp’s biopic of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, Modi – Three Days on the Wing of Madness, which is partially funded by the Red Sea Foundation. Depp made an appearance at the festival last year.
