Germany is still the benchmark, according to England manager Gareth Southgate, ahead of their UEFA Nations League meeting on Tuesday night.

Germany have a proud history when it comes to major tournaments, winning the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championships a combined seven times and reaching another seven finals.

Last summer, Southgate’s side defeated Germany in the knockout stages on their route to the EURO 2020 Final, although it was only the Three Lions’ second major final defeat.

“For me, Germany and Brazil are still the bar in terms of countries that have continuously won championships,” Southgate said.

“Even though everyone remembers the 5-1 win here [in 2001], they went on to win the World Cup on the strength of it.”
