South African artist Tyla wins the Best Afrobeats category at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs)
The 2024 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) took place at the UBS Arena in New York on 11 September.
Tyla beats prominent Nigerian artists Burna Boy, Tems, Davido, and Ayra Starr.
During her heartfelt acceptance speech, Tyla expressed that her victory was a “big moment for Africa”.
She highlighted the global success of her hit single, ‘Water’.
Also, Tyla went on to acknowledge the bittersweet nature of her achievement
Furthermore, she noted that “African music is so diverse; it’s more than just Afrobeats”.
Additionally, she emphasised the rich and varied musical traditions across the continent.
Added to Tyla’s win, the evening was dominated by Taylor Swift, who walked away with seven awards.
She ties for the most wins overall.
Taylor Swift’s success further solidified her position as one of the top artists in the world.
