While Nigerians are trying wade the storm of hardship triggered by the removal of petrol subsidy in 2023, the government is introducing palliatives. Some say it is late.
In the northeast, the cost of transportation had spiralled, forcing a harsher reality on residents.
Now, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) is attempting to address the situation.
The FEC has approved contracts worth ₦151.9 billion to introduce electric vehicles transportation in northeast Nigeria.
This initiative is backed by the Tinubu administration. It will see the supply of thousands of electric buses and tricycles alongside charging infrastructure.
This ambitious initiative will introduce electric buses, tricycles, and charging stations across the region.
Electric Buses Supply Plan
As part of the plan, Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited will supply ten 17-seater electric buses for ₦2.9 billionwithin six months.
Meanwhile, Messrs Mutual Commitment Company Limited will deliver 4,000 e-tricycles for ₦49.6 billion, while Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development will provide 3,000 more for ₦37.2 billion.

In addition, Sinoma Investment International Limited will manufacture and distribute another 3,000 e-tricycles, each designed to carry nine passengers plus a driver.
Electronic Vehicles Charging Stations
Furthermore, Messrs HNCEGC will produce and deliver 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs for ₦16.3 billion.
Also, to support this transition, Messrs KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited will construct and install EV charging stations for ₦8.4 billion.
Pushing Sustainability
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has taken responsibility for funding the project, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy efficiency.
Most importantly, the procurement was approved in October 2023.
Reports say President Tinubu has personally inspected the vehicles, chargers, and batteries. this is to ensure their quality and readiness.
Ultimately, with this investment, the north-east is now on track to become a hub for clean and modern transportation.
