Elon Musk and U.S President Donald Trump used to be friendly with each other. In fact, in 2024, Elon Musk supported Donald Trump when he was running for president of the United States again.

Musk gave over $200 million to support Trump’s campaign. He even went to events to show his support. Because of this, many people thought they had a strong working relationship.

This Is Why Elon Musk And Donald Trump Are No Longer Friends

After Trump won the 2024 election and became president again, he gave Elon Musk an important job in the government.

He asked Musk to be in charge of a new office called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This office was supposed to help reduce government waste and make things run better and faster.

At first, things looked good. Musk said he wanted to help make the government more efficient and use technology to solve problems. But very quickly, things started to change.

What Went Wrong?

In May 2025, Elon Musk resigned from his government job. That means he officially stepped down and left the position.

He said he didn’t agree with something called the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which is a new law that President Trump wanted to pass.

Musk said this bill would:

• Increase government spending
• Add more debt to the country
• Remove support (subsidies) for electric vehicles, which would affect companies like Tesla

Musk felt the bill would hurt the economy and the environment. He made his feelings known publicly.
Trump didn’t like Musk’s comments.

He responded by saying that Musk only cared about his own business and money. Trump also threatened to cancel federal contracts with Musk’s companies like SpaceX and Tesla. This made the situation worse.

The Fight Goes Public

After this disagreement, both men started talking badly about each other in public and online.

Elon Musk used his social media platform X to say Donald Trump wasn’t handling the economy properly.

He accused Trump of not being careful with the country’s money.

Donald Trump fired back, saying Musk was disloyal and only supported him for selfish reasons.

He also said Elon Musk couldn’t be trusted with government power.

What This Means Now

Because of this public fight:

• Tesla’s stock prices went down
• People are worried about SpaceX losing government support
• It’s unclear if Musk and Trump will ever work together again

Their fallout has become big news across the U.S. and even in other countries.

Some people are taking sides, while others are just watching to see what happens next.
