TG Omori, one of Nigeria’s most prominent music video directors, recently revealed that he had a kidney transplant after his brother donated one of his kidneys to save his life.
The news, which Omori shared on his official X account and Instagram, has sparked widespread concern and curiosity about the potential causes of his kidney failure.
While Omori has not disclosed the exact cause of his condition, there are several known factors that can contribute to kidney failure.
1. Fake Alcohol
One of the alarming factors that could potentially lead to kidney failure is the consumption of fake or adulterated alcohol.
In Lagos, there has been an increasing prevalence of counterfeit alcoholic beverages being sold in bars, clubs, and even retail outlets.
These fake alcohol products often contain toxic substances such as methanol, a chemical that can cause severe damage to the liver and kidneys when ingested.
Unfortunately, many consumers are unaware of the dangers posed by these fake products.
Also, it makes it a silent but deadly threat to public health.
2. Smoking
TG Omori revealed that he quit smoking four months before his kidney transplant.
Indeed, smoking is well-known to be detrimental to overall health, including the kidneys.
Nicotine and other harmful chemicals in cigarettes can constrict blood vessels, reducing blood flow to the kidneys.
This reduction in blood flow can impair the kidneys’ ability to filter waste from the blood, leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD) over time.
3. Hypertension
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a leading cause of kidney failure.
It is possible that TG Omori’s kidney failure could have been exacerbated by undiagnosed or poorly managed hypertension.
High blood pressure damages the blood vessels in the kidneys, reducing their ability to filter waste from the blood effectively.
Over time, this damage can lead to chronic kidney disease.
Also, it may eventually result in kidney failure if left untreated.
4. Diabetes
Diabetes is another major risk factor for kidney failure.
High blood sugar levels can damage the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys.
Also, it could lead to diabetic nephropathy, a type of kidney disease that often progresses to kidney failure.
While there is no public information indicating that TG Omori has diabetes, it remains one of the most common underlying causes of kidney failure worldwide.
5. Over-the-Counter Medications
Another potential contributor to kidney failure is the overuse or misuse of over-the-counter medications and supplements.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), certain antibiotics, and some herbal supplements can cause kidney damage when taken in excessive amounts or without proper medical supervision.

In Nigeria, the unregulated use of these substances in form of self-medication is widespread. Unfortunately, many people may unknowingly put their kidneys at risk by self-medicating.
