There’s an old adage that says, “Comparison is the thief of joy,” but it seems Nigerian music fans often disregard this wisdom as they frequently compare Afrobeats stars to one another.
Now, indigenous rapper Phyno has expressed frustration over the constant comparisons made between him and his long-time collaborator Olamide, or any other rapper.
Over the years, fans have often compared Phyno, who primarily raps in Igbo, and Olamide, who predominantly raps in Yoruba.
The latest instance occurred when an X user, @TheDamiForeign, reignited the debate by asking, “when it comes to rap, who’s the GOAT? Phyno versus Olamide.”
In response, Phyno did not hold back, sharing his annoyance:
“Yo!!! What’s wrong with you guys, for God’s sake? Stop putting me against my brother or anyone else for that matter. Do your banter with someone else. You people are just out of line.”
Phyno’s response shows his discontent with fans’ tendency to spark rivalry between artists who share mutual respect and camaraderie.
He stressed that instead of fostering unnecessary competition, fans should focus on enjoying the music and appreciating the individuality of each artist.
