The 27-year-old was included in the 33-man provisional squad, and he played for half an hour of England’s 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday.

But he has left the camp prior to the Three Lions’ final friendly before the tournament against Iceland.

Maddison had struggled for form in the back-end of the season.

However, he only scored one Premier League goal between January and May, while providing our assists, after being ruled out for two months with an ankle injury mid-season.

Also, he has only won seven caps for his country and has never played at a major tournament.

He was included in the squad for the 2022 World Cup but failed to play a single minute.

Southgate will have to cut his squad down to 26 players, meaning that six other players will also be cut from his final squad.

It remains to be seen if those decisions will also be made prior to the Iceland game, as England will fly to Germany shortly after the final whistle.
