The funeral for Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who died in Kenya after being set on fire by her boyfriend, will be held on September 14 in her home country, organisers said on Monday, September 9, 2024.
The 33-year-old athlete, who competed in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics last month, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday.
She had been doused with petrol and set alight at her home in western Kenya four days prior.
Cheptegei’s death has sparked widespread anger and sorrow, highlighting the growing concern of gender-based violence in Kenya.
At least two other athletes have lost their lives at the hands of their partners in recent times.
Doctors reported that Cheptegei suffered burns to over 80% of her body in the attack.
The police have identified Cheptegei’s Kenyan partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, as the perpetrator.
He also suffered serious burns and is currently being treated in hospital.
