The deactivation of mobile SIM cards by MTN in Nigeria came as a huge surprise to many people, especially those who had already linked their National Identity Number (NIN) to their SIM cards.
The frustration caused by this deactivation led to an uproar on social media.
However, as Nigerians gathered at various offices to reactivate their mobile numbers, that frustration turned into anger.
That anger was what led to the vandalism of the MTN office in the FESTAC area of Lagos State.
As we speak, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, has condemned the vandalism of the facility.
This drama all began on Sunday, when MTN deactivated the mobile lines of numerous users, reportedly due to NIN-SIM linkage issues.

Things, however, got out of hand when some of the angry subscribers stormed the MTN office at 72 Junction, Opposite First Bank, 23 Road, Festac Town, Lagos, and took out their frustration on the buildings over allegations that the staff were unwilling to help.
A 17-second video shared on X, showed a crowd of subscribers breaking into the telecoms premises.
The crowd pulled back the iron bars used as security fencing around the premises to access the building.
In response to the vandalism, Hundeyin, spoke via a post on X.
He stated: “This should not be the way to go!
“Meanwhile, the DPO FESTAC and his men responded immediately they got the report.
They succeeded in restoring normalcy and are still on ground to maintain peace.”
