Retired tennis legend Serena Williams has acquired an ownership stake in the Toronto Tempo, Canada’s first Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) team, the organization announced on Monday, March 3, 2025.

She will be actively involved in designing the team’s jerseys and collaborating on unique merchandise partnerships. This move marks an exciting new chapter for Williams, who made her professional tennis debut in Canada in 1995.

In a statement released by the Tempo, Williams expressed her enthusiasm for the new venture. “I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo. ”

Serena Williams has joined Larry Tanenbaum in the ownership of the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s first franchise outside the U.S., set to debut in 2026.

The team will play home games in an 8,700-seat Toronto arena, with additional games in Montreal and Vancouver.

Tanenbaum, chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures and Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, praised Williams as an icon and role model, saying, “She exemplifies the very best of what the Tempo stand for  we couldn’t be more honored to have Serena in our court.”
