Sancho, Martial roles: What Manchester United Coach Solskjaer thinks about them

Anthony Martial has been seen consistently, struggling in Manchester United since his arrival from Monaco back in 2015, when Louis van Gaal was the Red Devil manager.

Although, he proved doubters wrong in the just concluded season, as the France international was able to find the net 23 times across all competitions.

The had already moved to sign Erling Haaland in January but, since the striker turned down a move, Martial has delivered.

The brilliance of Martial is exactly why United are now choosing to prioritise Sancho, who plays on the right wing.

Recall that, during Jose Mourinho’s time in charge, the 24-year-old often had to settle for a place on the wing – rather than a central berth, but Solskjaer is happy with Martial as his main man.

He is said to be content with Ighalo playing second fiddle to the Frenchman up top, with the Nigeria international impressing since his loan move from Shanghai Shenhua in January.

And he plans on using Sancho on the right, with Marcus Rashford primed to play on the opposite flank.

Whether United succeed in landing the Dortmund star remains to be seen, however, with Michael Zorc insisting on Monday that the forward would be staying in Germany.

“We plan on having Jadon Sancho in our team this season, the decision is final,” he said. “I think that answers all our questions.

“Last summer, we adjusted Jadon’s salary to match the development of his performances.
“So in context, we had already extended his contract until 2023 back then.”

United legend Owen Hargreaves, meanwhile, thinks it’s only a matter of time before Sancho makes the move to the Theatre of Dreams despite Dortmund’s public admission.

“Bluff! Calling the bluff, yeah,” Hargreaves said on BT Sport.

“I think he will be a Man United player in a pretty short time.

“[Dortmund are] trying to get a bit more money out of it, that’s just the nature of the beast.

“Obviously they know United are really interested, they’re pretty heavy into negotiations.

“But I think they’re bluffing, they know he’s going to leave at that price.”

He then added: “Everybody’s trying to do their job.

“I think for Dortmund, Man United know they sell all their players, they always have done for the last five or six years.

“So you can almost laugh them off and say: ‘Come on, we know you always sell your best players’.

“But because of all the players they’ve sold and all the money they’ve generated, they’re probably not in a position where – even though there’s the coronavirus – they don’t need it as desperate.

“They sold [Ousmane] Dembele for £100m so I think they can hold out a little bit longer, get a bit more money.”
