As Sadiq Khan flipped sizzling plantains in a Peckham kitchen, he revealed plans for a landmark trade mission to Africa — the first by a London mayor.
His visit to Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa aims to deepen cultural ties and attract new investment to the capital.
But back at City Hall, tensions simmered.
Over five days, he plans to travel to Lagos, Accra, Johannesburg and Cape Town, where he will lead the first-ever mayoral trade delegation to the continent.
Celebrating African Heritage
He announced the visit during a stop at The Flygerians, a Nigerian restaurant in Peckham, where he praised the contributions of London’s African diaspora.
“Londoners of African heritage have played a huge role in making London the greatest city in the world,” he said.
“This mission gives us a fantastic opportunity to deepen our partnerships and attract further investment into London.”
Backing London Businesses
Furthermore, he will bring along London companies through the Grow London Global programme, helping firms expand into African markets.

Criticism Over Oxford Street Absence
Meanwhile, his announcement triggered political backlash.

While Khan engaged with restaurant owners in Peckham, the London Assembly met to vote on his controversial plan to pedestrianise Oxford Street.
Leader of the City Hall Conservatives, Susan Hall, criticised his absence.
“Apparently the mayor is at a Nigerian restaurant.
I hope he’s enjoying his jollof pot.
He’s more interested in Lagos than John Lewis.”
More Foreign Trips Ahead
Earlier that day, Khan spent over two hours responding to Assembly questions about transport.
When asked why he skipped the Oxford Street session, he replied, “I suspect I’m busy with other things.”
Later this year, he also plans to attend the C40 World Mayors Summit in Rio – marking what will become his 20th overseas trip since becoming mayor in 2016.
