Ryland Headley, 92, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years for the brutal rape and murder of 26-year-old Louisa Dunne in Bristol.
This is a crime committed 58 years ago.
This conviction marks the oldest cold case murder conviction in UK history.
Also, Ryland Headley becomes the oldest person ever jailed for murder in the country.
A Cruel Crime Reopened by Modern Forensics
Louisa Dunne, a young mother of two and a widow, was found murdered in her Easton flat in 1967.
For decades, her attacker remained unknown until a 2023 breakthrough in DNA analysis finally linked Ryland Headley to the crime.
Also, his DNA was discovered on Dunne’s clothing after a cold case review by Avon and Somerset Police.
In delivering the sentence, Justice Sweeting condemned Headley as a “cruel, depraved, and pitiless man,”
A Pattern of Violence
After leaving Bristol, Headley moved to Ipswich where, in 1977, he raped two elderly women aged 79 and 84.
Initially sentenced to life, his punishment was controversially reduced
This was after psychiatrists argued his actions stemmed from marital sexual frustration.
He served only two years behind bars.
No Remorse, No Escape
Throughout the decades, Headley showed no remorse, believing he had outrun justice.
However, the recent forensic development and the persistence of cold case investigators ensured accountability was finally served.

Prosecutor Anna Vigars KC stated that had this crime been tried in the 1960s, Headley could have faced the death penalty.
Also, she emphasised the horror and pain Louisa Dunne endured, and the lifelong grief inflicted on her family.
