When you use the word assurance in Nigeria, it it easier for a Nigerian to remember Davido than believe in what you are saying.

Davido had a popular song entitled Assurance, believed to be for his lover, Chioma.

For Oseni Rufai, a popular Nigerian journalist, speaker and TV host when you say “I assure you”, you could lose him in that conversation.

Why?

Rufai was talking about Peter Obi’s decision to challenge the electoral body’s process in the February 25 presidential elections.

He was on a live show aired on Arise Television.

“Maybe because I live in Nigeria, whenever I hear people say, ‘I assure you,’ I get scared.”

Too many times we have heard, ‘I assure you’, ‘I assure you’, yet nothing is happening.

Enemies Of The Rule Of Law

Davido’s Assurance to Chioma is more tenable than their own assurance, he insisted.

According to him, the institutions of Nigeria have become enemies of the rule of law.

“The INEC chief is not supposed to be assuring anybody anything. He is supposed to follow the rule of law to the letter.

“In a country where you don’t have rule of law, you have rule of lawyers.

“A society where the institutions become enemies of the Rule of Law is a society that starts to sink steadily, and that is why Nigeria is where it is today.

“If INEC claims there is nothing to hide, they should be quick to surrender everything to be inspected in the first place.

“It is obvious that there is definitely something to hide that we don’t know about here.

“When the institutions set up by the state to uphold the rule of law are the ones violating the rule of law, they become the rule of law, then you should know the country is headed south, and that is what is happening in Nigeria now,” he said.

On the role of the Judiciary on the future of Nigeria’s democracy, Rufai also has something to say.

“We call on the judiciary; Nigerians are watching, the future and furtherance of democracy in Nigeria will be dependent on the decisions taken.

“By not upholding the rule of law, we are dancing and playing with fire.”
