Music executive Paulo Okoye has expressed concerns that afrobeats sensation Rema may be overpricing himself.
In a conversation with media personality, Daddy Freeze, Paulo acknowledged that Rema was a standout Gen Z superstar and a leading figure in African music.
He said his current pricing might not be justified by his fanbase.
Paulo praised Rema’s influence, noting that the Western world views him on par with American artists, which is a significant achievement.
However, he emphasized that Rema needs to perform more shows and build a larger, more dedicated fanbase to fully justify his high price tag.
“Rema is on another level,” Paulo said.
“He’s our major face of African music. But the problem with Rema at the moment is overpricing. I think he overpriced himself. He needs to do more shows to build a huge fanbase to earn his price tag.”
Additionally, Paulo highlighted that the earnings of Rema and his colleague Asake have seen a decline.
According to him, the two artists, who once commanded fees of $4 million to $5 million, have seen their earnings drop to $2 million (₦3.2 billion) and $3 million (₦4.8 billion) in 2023 and 2024.
This commentary comes after Rema made headlines for his performance at the high-profile wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant on July 12 at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai.
