As of May 1999, Lagos State had not submitted any financial reports for the previous two years.

Between May 1999 and May 2007, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu served Lagos State as governor.

When he took office, the state was in a sorry state, with a failing infrastructure, shattered businesses, a shrinking economy, a filthy environment, a crumbling public transport system, terrible healthcare, security concerns, a failing educational sector and a disjointed justice system, among other things.

EDUCATION

In order to make public schools, especially those at the primary level, appealing to the general public, Governor Tinubu started the age of reform, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of the education sector in the state in 1999.

He started the rehabilitation of secondary schools, construction of model classrooms, and revival of unused classrooms in 38 schools.

Between 1999-2007, Tinubu overhauled and sustained the payment of bursary awards to Lagos State Students in higher institutions, including Law School;

In 1999, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s administration ensured that a total of 220 non-teaching staff benefited from training at various workshops/seminar.

Also, 226 officers from grade level 07 and above were recommended for promotion by the Personnel Management Board.

In 2000, Governor Tinubu activated the provision of free education in all public primary and secondary schools, including payment of WAEC/NECO fees as well as all internal examination fees to ensure that indigent children do not drop out of school.

The Lagos State Scholarship Board received a total of ₦4.057 million from Tinubu’s administration in 1999–2000 as payment to 737 previous grantees.

In addition, ₦33.5 million was given to 3,342 indigenous students enrolled in various Nigerian institutions.

Additionally, 3 million Naira was distributed to all 75 Lagos State Law students enrolled at the Abuja Law School.

HEALTHCARE

Healthcare access was free for children below 16 and adults above 60 and free surgical sessions for many children.

Patients received substantial subsidies for their prescription medications.

Millions of Lagosians were saved from vision issues thanks to the Blindness Prevention Programme.

Free eye operations were performed, and patients received glasses (Jigi Bola) at no cost.

The Lagos State AIDS Control Agency had increased its youth-focused education initiative in an effort to lessen the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Tinubu established an extra 49 primary healthcare centres throughout the state and renovated nine of them.

Also, he transformed the Ikeja General Hospital into LASUTH (Lagos State University Teaching Hospital), which set a precedent for other hospitals across the nation.

He equipped and upgraded five hospitals from various local governments to become general hospitals.

Tinubu initiated Hospital based 24-hour free emergency services (LASEMS) and Pre hospital ambulance service accessed from the 123 emergency hot lines (LASAMBUS)

SECURITY

Lagos used to be the hub of criminal activity in Nigeria.

Hoodlums and thugs could be found nearly everywhere, gang battles and cultist attacks were frequent and people were afraid to walk out at night for fear of being robbed.

Without Asiwaju Tinubu’s intervention, a number of young and unemployable individuals, who constituted a serious threat to Lagosians’ safety, would have turned to selling drugs or weapons.

The RRS (Rapid Response Squad) was established by Tinubu to combat this threat.

It is an arm of the police that is entirely funded by the state to purchase vehicles, equipment and other types of support for the department.

The RRS quickly got to work and was able to reduce criminal activity in the state.

The other action Tinubu took involved infrastructure improvements, which eliminated all criminal hideouts in the state. Most of the bushes where criminals used to hide were soon taken out.

TRANSPORTATION

This sector is one that also bears marks of Tinubu’s achievements During his eight years. as governor of Lagos State.

Tinubu led numerous reforms in the transport industry, which encompasses all modes of road, rail, river and air transport.

The initial phase of the Lagos State Bus Rapid Transport System, which was pioneered by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was intended to run from mile 12 to CMS.

In order to enforce order on Lagos roads, LAGBUS as well as the creation of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

On creation, 200 motorcycles, eight heavy-duty tow vehicles, and contemporary communication technology were introduced.

In the first three years of his administration, a whopping 14 billion Naira was spent on 417 road development projects covering 250 miles around the state.

HOUSING 

The Ministry of Housing was created by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu between 1999 – 2007.

Asiwaju constructed several low and high income housing Units at Estate in Ajah, Lekki, Ikorodu, Gbagada, Ilupeju and Ikeja.

Through Private Sector Participation (PSP), Asiwaju Tinubu constructed 201 units of two bedroom flats, Ewu Elepe.

Furthermore, 18 units of detached houses at Ewu Elepe, 36 units of four bedroom Terrace Houses at Ikeja Phase 11, Ikeja GRA, 26 units of Terrace Houses at Ilupeju and 704 units of 8-in-1 three bedroom flats at Ajah were also constructed.

A total of 22,4936 billion Naira was committed between 1999 to 2007 to Lagos state Housing.

Finally, he brags of his achievements in Lagos, the most amazing being raising the IGR to an unimaginable height.

“I am different, I have governed Lagos State. I have built a modern state that could be a country on its own.”

Also, in an interview with the BBC, he emphasised his capacity.

“I have led an administration that is so prudent. From 600 million (Naira) Internally Generated Revenue to 5 billion a month.

“That is a record. Nobody else can brag about that.”

Tinubu ended his administration with awards to crown his many efforts for the people of Lagos state.

Nigerians are hopeful that he would repeat the feat as the president of Africa’s most populous nation.
