The Premier League has announced the introduction of semi-automated offside technology, starting this month.
The decision to implement this technology was made a year ago, after Premier League clubs voted unanimously in favor of it.
According to the Premier League, the new technology will be introduced on Saturday, April 12, 2025, during Match Round 32.
A statement explained that semi-automated offside technology automates key elements of the offside decision-making process, supporting the video assistant referee (VAR).
This technology utilizes optical player tracking to provide more efficient placement of the virtual offside line and generates virtual graphics to enhance the fan experience
The technology has already undergone a trial in the FA Cup fifth round and has been successfully used in various international competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cup and the Champions League.
The Premier League collaborated with PGMOL and sports data and technology company Genius Sports to develop the semi-automated offside technology system.
This technology aims to maintain the integrity of the game while improving the speed, efficiency, and consistency of offside decision-making.
The first Premier League match to feature semi-automated offside technology will be the encounter between Manchester City and Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
