Controversial Nigerian singer Portable has publicly criticised the organisers of the 11th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for allegedly overlooking veteran actor and producer Ibrahim Chatta in this year’s honours.
Following the awards ceremony held on May 10, 2025, Portable took to Instagram with an emotional video.
He claims that a “gang-up” within the entertainment industry led to Chatta’s loss despite his powerful performance in House of GAA, which earned him a nomination for Best Lead Actor.
That category was ultimately won by Femi Adebayo for his role in Seven Doors, while Chioma Chukwuka clinched the Best Lead Actress award.
“My fans, there’s a gang-up in Nollywood and the entertainment industry at large. Despite Ibrahim Chatta’s brilliant acting, they refused to give him an award,” Portable lamented.
Drawing parallels with his own experience at The Headies, the singer further criticised the country’s award culture.
He suggests that accolades are often influenced by wealth, status, or connections rather than talent.
“We don’t need awards; we need food and money. But some people buy awards with money. Ibrahim Chatta, if they don’t award you, God will reward you. You are my mentor, and I love you,” he added.
Interestingly, Ibrahim Chatta himself had recently voiced disinterest in the AMVCA awards, subtly alluding to a pattern of industry bias against him.
Portable’s comments have since stirred debate online.
