
Gospel musician and pioneer of Tiv gospel Swange music, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, popularly known as New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53.
This sparks widespread grief across Benue State and among Christian communities nationwide.
Israel Ikyereve is celebrated for transforming traditional Tiv Swange rhythms into a powerful vessel for Christian evangelism.
He died after a period of illness, leaving behind a remarkable spiritual and musical legacy.
Among the first to pay tribute was Former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, who led a condolence visit to the late singer’s residence in Makurdi, accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group.
Samuel Ortom described Ikyereve as a man of unwavering faith and a musical icon whose gospel messages reached audiences well beyond Nigeria’s borders.
“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” Ortom said.
“That attraction led to a personal relationship with him, which blossomed into a lasting bond with his family.”
The former governor recalled witnessing one of Ikyereve’s songs being played during a music class in Australia.

Ortom offered prayers for the bereaved family and pledged ongoing support to both the family

He vowed not to abandon them following the burial.

He also revealed a touching detail, one of Israel’s sons was named “Ortom” in gratitude for the former governor’s compassionate involvement in their lives.

Prayers were also offered by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr Joseph Antyo, leaders of the Brethren Prayer Group.
Israel Ikyereve is survived by his wife, fellow gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve and four children
His burial ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 5, 2025.
