PIB: Senate inaugurates 7-member conference committee on PIB   

As a move to harmonise the just-passed Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, the Nigerian Senate has constituted a seven- Member Conference Committee that will brainstorm with their counterparts in the House of Representatives

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan disclosed this during a plenary on Tuesday.

The two chambers of the National Assembly last Thursday passed the PIB, after about 13 years of legislative fireworks where the Senate approved  3 percent and House of Representatives to 5 percent of Operating Expenditure granted to the Host Communities and 30 percent provision for the Frontier Exploration Fund

The bill was first sent to the National Assembly in 2008 by late President Umaru Yar’Adua, without translating it into an Act.

The PIB, 2020 seeks to introduce far-reaching reforms in the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

However, Lawan stated that the Senators will meet with members in the lower Chamber to engage them with a bid to harmonizing the passed Bill for onward transmission to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.

The Conference Committee which has the Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, All Progressives Congress, Kebbi North as Chairman, has Senator Mohammed Sabo, APC, Jigawa South West for North West; Senator Albert Bassey Akpan, Peoples Democratic Party Party, PDP, Akwa Ibom North-East representing South-South; Senator Danjuma Goje, APC, Gombe Central for North East as members.

Other members are Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, APC, Ekiti Central representing South-East; Senator Stella Oduah, PDP, Anambra North for South-East and Senator Gabriel Suswam, PDP, Benue North East representing  North Central.

Meanwhile, Senators and members of the House of Representatives from the South West geo- Political zone of the country will today meet with governors from the South West.

Lawan read a letter signed by the Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Robert Boroffice, APC, Ondo North and Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.

According to the letter, the meeting which will hold at 7pm today in Osun Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja has PIB, Electoral Act Amendment Bill as agenda.
