Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo paid tribute to Cheptegei, saying, “Paris will not forget her.”

“We’ll dedicate a sports venue to her so that her memory and her story remain among us and help carry the message of equality.”

Hidalgo continued, “She dazzled us here in Paris. We saw her beauty, strength, and freedom, and it was likely her beauty, strength, and freedom that were intolerable for the person who committed this murder.”

Cheptegei, who competed in the Paris Olympics women’s marathon, was killed after being set on fire by her Kenyan partner.

The incident has sparked outrage, with many demanding action against gender-based violence.

Cheptegei made her Olympic debut in the women’s marathon at the Paris Games, finishing 44th.
