Panic as petrol tanker guts fire in Obalende, Lagos

A tanker containing 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, popularly known as petrol caught fire opposite a fuel station at Obalende roundabout, Lagos Island.

The was serious panic as residents along with motorist were running helter-skelter trying to put off the fire.

This is coming barely one week after the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, filling station located along Yaya Abatan, Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area, LGA, went up in flames, destroying over 30 vehicles in the process following a tanker explosion.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident which occurred at about 5. 10 pm, said the situation has been brought under control.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu: “The agency received a distress call on the above incident concerning a 45, 000-litre capacity tanker loaded with PMS which was set ablaze having fallen on its side directly in front of the petrol station.

“Efforts to combat the flames by the agency’s officials and men of the Lagos State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service is ongoing. The fire has been curtailed and very soon it will be extinguished station and surrounding buildings protected.

“We appeal for calm and urge members of the public to keep away and allow the responders to complete their work.”
