History has been made, recruitment of personnel to commence – State Govt

LAWMAKERS in Ondo state has Tuesday, passed a bill for a law to establish the State Security Network Agency and Amotekun Corps bill into law.

The bill passed through the first and second reading after which it was deliberated upon at the plenary.

Recall that a public hearing of the bill took place on the 24th of last month in which major stakeholders across the state made inputs.

At the plenary today, the Majority Leader, Hon Jamiu Maito moved a motion for the bill to be submitted to the house by Chairman House Committee on Security Matter, Hon. Ololade Begudu and this was seconded by Hon. Favour Tomowemo representing Ilaje 2.

The clerk of the Assembly, Mr Bode Adeyelu then read the bill for third time and the majority leader thereafter moved the motion for its passage.

Giving an insight to the bill, the chairman House Committee on Security, Hon. Begudu said that the security agency would have a board to be administered by a chairman and be appointed by the state governor.

Begudu added that the chairman must be a person of proven integrity and that there would a commander to man the personnel of the corps on field.

He added that “the commander must a retired security personnel not below rank of major or its equivalent and being subjected to confirmation of the house of assembly.

While contributing, the Speaker of the house, Rt Hon Bamidele Oleyelogun described as remarkable the passage of the bill.

Adorning Amotekun attire, Oleyelogun assured the people of the state that the bill after passed into law by governor Rotimi Akeredolu would reduce criminality drastically in the state.

The Speaker said that the corps would be a community policing body that would complement the work of other security agencies in the state.

He therefore warned the men of underworld to relocate from the state noting that Amotekun had come to stay.

In his reaction, the state Commissioner for Justice and the Attorney General, Kola Olawoye, said that with the passage of the bill “history had been made in the state.

Olawoye said: “This is the first time that Yoruba race would speak with one voice without opposition. After all, it is the function and duty of government to protect its citizenry,” .

Reacting to the development, the special Adviser to the governor on security Matters, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo said ” we are starting the recruitment of personnel immediately. We have perfected all the arrangement.

” This is novel. This is what we have been waiting for. We are now good to go.

On the number of personnel to be recruited, Dojumo said ” we will let you know before the end of this week.
