Nollywood filmmaker Omoni Oboli has opened up about her early struggles in the film industry, revealing that she traded her scripts for acting roles in films.
In a recent interview with Radionow 95.3 FM, Oboli shared how her experiences led her to pursue a career as a director.
“I was trading my scripts, telling them to just take it without paying me, as long as I got a role in the film,” Oboli recalled.
However, she soon realized the final product didn’t match the vision she had while writing.
“I write in pictures, so when I watched the movies, they didn’t quite reflect what I had in mind.
“I knew no two directors would interpret the same script the same way, but I wanted my stories to carry my DNA, so I decided to direct them myself,” she explained.
Despite initial fears, Oboli found the courage to pursue directing, studying the craft while on set.
“It was a scary thought who was I to direct a film? But then I said to myself, ‘Warri no dey carry last.’
“I started observing directors closely while acting and later attended the New York Film Academy for formal training,” she said.
Today, Oboli boasts a successful directing career with films like Moms at War, Last Year Single, and The Uprising: Wives on Strike 3, the latest installment of the Wives on Strike series, set to premiere in cinemas this October.
