Afrobeats sensation Rema has been honored with a royal plaque by the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II.
Rema was gifted the award in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of Edo culture and heritage.
The prestigious award was presented to Rema during a visit to the Oba’s palace on Thursday.
This is just before his highly anticipated homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.
This honour is particularly significant as it comes on the heels of another remarkable event in Rema’s career.
On Wednesday, the singer joined Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Edo Arena.
Also, the new 6,000-capacity venue is set to be named “Rema Dome” in his honour.
Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City
However, he has consistently used his platform to highlight the rich history and legacy of the ancient Benin Empire.
His music often reflects his pride in his roots.
Also, his latest hit, “Benin Boys,” serves as a tribute to the city.
The track, which features fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, includes a line where Rema mentions that he deserves a medal from the Oba for his efforts in promoting the kingdom.
