In the past few years, northerners have gone through so much hardship and insecurity.

Due to the insecurity, rural farmers have refused to go to work for fear of getting killed.

Those who go, have a limit to where they can get to. So, they reuse farm lands, boosting it with so much fertiliser. But that is a story for another day.

There is a high rate of kidnapping and this has affected interstate businesses and limited interstate travel.

North-West, North-East and the North-Central make up the northern region.

The presidential candidates, along with their running mates, have also taken their campaigns to the northern region. They have all made promises to bring an end to issues affecting them.

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, along with his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, who is from Kaduna in the north, have taken their campaigns to the northern regions.

Tired Of Insecurity

But critics say Obi may not have so much popularity in the north.

On national television, the chieftain of the Labour Party (LP), Ibraham Abdulkarim, said the flag bearer for his party, Peter Obi, would be getting more votes in northern Nigeria than the southern part of the country.

He believes northerners are angry and tired of insecurity and other issues.

Abulkarim, who is also the director of the general voter coalition initiative, Big Tent Nigeria, expressed this confidence on February 8, 2023.

The God People Have Prayed To

“Let me tell you what is happening in the north. A lot of people feel that Peter Obi is not going to get votes from the north.

“By the special grace of God, he is going to get more votes from the north, maybe even more than from some southern parts of the country, because the anger is greater in the north than the people in the south.”

According to him, his poll result from northern Nigeria shows that Nigerians in the north prefer Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed.

“Last week, I was in Kano at three radio stations, and I opened the line of phone-in, for more than 45 minutes.

“All the people that called in attested to what I was saying and agreed with the Labour Party manifesto and the thinking and ideology we are bringing on board.

“It is not us doing it but the God that people have prayed to.

“Northerners deep in the villages, are tired of the suffering and want a change in the governance of the country.” he said

The northern part of Nigeria is made up of 19 states, and the Federal Capital Territory boasts a higher vote in the last six elections since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
