*As NNPC lays 200-bed hospital foundation in Borno

Nigeria's COVID-19 cases surpasses 12,000, as NCDC confirms 342 deaths

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, on Saturday, confirmed additional 389 new cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the country, bringing the total infections in the most populous black race to 12, 233 cases.

This is also coming even as NCDC confirmed an additional nine new deaths to the virus, bringing the total death to the virus in the country to 342.

According to NCDC, Lagos, Federal Capital Territory, and Delta State recorded the highest cases, followed by Oyo, Borno, Rivers, Edo and Ebonyi states amongst others.

The agency in its microsite stated that, “On the 6th of June 2020, 389 new confirmed cases and 9 deaths were recorded in Nigeria. No new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours.

“Till date, 12233 cases have been confirmed, 3826 cases have been discharged and 342 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The 389 new cases are reported from 23 states- Lagos(66), FCT (50), Delta(32), Oyo(31), Borno (26), Rivers(24), Edo (23), Ebonyi(23), Anambra(17), Gombe(17), Nasarawa(14), Imo(12), Kano (12), Sokoto(12), Jigawa (8), Ogun(7), Bauchi (5), Kebbi (2), Kaduna(2), Katsina(2), Ondo(2), Abia(1), Niger(1).”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has laid the foundation for the construction of a 200-bed Emergency and Infectious Disease Hospital in Maiduguri.

The NNPC Group Managing Director (GMD), Mr Mele Kyari, during the groundbreaking ceremony, said the project would be executed by the company with support from Total and other oil and gas companies operating in the country.
Kyari said that the second COVID-19 Infectious Disease Hospital was sited in the state because of the already existing challenges aggregated by insecurity.
He said that the NNPC would provide medical facilities, logistics and support to patients at the completion of the projects.
“It is not really a favour to the state, it is something that really needs to be done, and something we are challenged to do,” the GMD said.
He said that President Muhammadu Buhari had particularly told NNPC to pay attention to Borno by doing everything possible to make sure that there are energy, security and exploration activities in the state
“And we are focused on delivering on all those,” Kyari said.
