The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Turkey says some Nigerian students traumatised by the earthquake that hit the country on Monday are currently undergoing post-trauma analysis.

According to Punch, the president of NANS Turkish zone, Yakubu Sabo, said the students would be released after being certified okay.

Sabo was quoted to have said: “Turkey is an earthquake-prone area.

“Some of our new students were traumatised and have been taken in for post-shock analysis.

“They will be released as soon as they are certified okay.

“The old students are already used to it. We will provide more updates along the line”.

Thousands of workers are currently digging through debris. They are searching for survivors after an earthquake left about 5,100 persons dead in Turkey and Syria.

Countries have been sending rescue teams to assist with the task.

Officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) have warned that the death toll may still increase by thousands.

Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has declared a three-month state of emergency in the 10 provinces affected by the earthquake.

“We are face to face with one of the biggest disasters ever for our region,” he said.

The president noted on Tuesday that the death toll in the country alone has risen to 3,549 and over 8,000 people have been rescued.

He also stated that 16,000 search and rescue personnel have been deployed and thousands of foreign rescuers are joining.
