Nigeria risk not becoming develop at end of 21st century – Ezekwesili

Former Presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili has berated Nigeria’s democratic system said it risk not being developed at the end of 21th century.

Speaking during the Fix Politics conference held in Lagos on Monday, the ex presidential candidate in her findings said: “The Economic Underperformance of Nigeria and much of Africa is the Key Driver in Which #FixPolitics research rests.

“At current, Nigeria, nay Africa risks not becoming developed even at the end of the 21st Century. By 2030, Africa will be the only continent with nearly the entire world’s remaining cases of Extreme Poverty.

This means that all other regions of the world will have zero rate of Extreme Poverty. Nigeria is already the world capital of Extreme Poverty. By 2050, Africa’s Population will be only growing Region of the World. By 2050, Nigeria’ Population will be the world’s Third Largest after China and India.

Ezekwesili who described Politics of Africa as grossly low performance saying “It’s an Existential Threat. Findings from a recent Afrobarometer survey show that more than 1 in 3 desire to leave the country in order to escape economic hardship…

She added: “The steady rise of economic growth only happened from 1999 after Nigeria’s return to Democracy. But is Nigeria and much of Africa ever going to become functional democracies properly So-Called?

“Democracy is a system of government in which the people, either directly or through an elected representative, control the creation of laws. “Government for the people, of the people and by the people.”

Ezekwesili who liken monopoly democracy as trying to put bandage on a broken bone saying “it won’t work”.

She further urged citizens in the absence of an effective regulatory system to reduce the powers of the monopoly, by taking responsibility for correcting the distortion in the political system. “Monopoly Democracy is a structural defect. Every problem that is structural demands Structural Solutions.

“The Research proposes 3 – pronged concurrent measures: 1. Raise the influence and exertion of the powers the electorate: Make the vote of the low-income class expensive. Raise productivity and improve political literacy for higher consciousness. Provide the Middle Class evidence of their declining wellbeing and journey to Poverty. 2. Flood the political space with a new political class trained on customized content on Politics, policy and governance to offer a new political culture that subordinates collective welfare. 3. Mobilize the public to collectively compel executive and legislative actions for the reform of political and electoral system”.
