Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark has made history at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games by breaking the Paralympic record in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category.
Her impressive lift of 147kg surpassed the previous record held by fellow Nigerian Lucy Ejike.
Mark’s performance marks an iconic achievement as she secured Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
She opened her campaign with a lift of 140kg, followed by an impressive 145kg in her second attempt.
In her third lift, she pushed 147kg, breaking her own world record and clinching the gold medal, subsequently, Mark went on to lift 150kg in her final attempt, setting yet another world record.
Jianjin Cui of China took the silver medal with a lift of 140kg, while Mexico’s Amalia Perez Vazquez claimed bronze with a 135kg lift
Team Nigeria has long been a powerhouse in Paralympic powerlifting and athletics. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, the country won 10 medals, four of them gold.
