House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the alleged abandonment of the Safe School Initiative of the Federal Government initiated by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2014.

The probe is coming in the wake of attacks on schools and mass abduction of students and workers across Nigeria.

At the plenary on Thursday, the House resolved to urge the Federal Government to collaborate with state governments to “restore, revive and revalidate the Safe School Initiative and deploy special security personnel to schools in Nigeria.”

The House also mandated its Committee on Basic Education and Services to “carry out an investigation on the use of over N2bn released for the Safe School Initiative alongside other donations from other countries and organisations, and report back within six weeks for further legislative action.”
