Newcastle Plan To Appeal Gordon’s Red Card

Eddie Howe says Newcastle will consider appealing against the red card shown to Anthony Gordon during his side’s FA Cup loss to Brighton on Sunday.

Gordon was sent off late in normal time of the FA Cup fifth round tie for a two-handed push on Jean Paul van Hecke in the Brighton box.

The Seagulls went on to win 2-1 in the second half of extra-time.

The dismissal will see Gordon suspended for the next three matches, including the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16.

However, Howe believes the Newcastle winger had no malicious intent and says the Magpies will look to have the card overturned if they believe there are grounds to do so.

“Of course. If we analyse the incident and feel there’s grounds for that [an appeal], we will do without hesitation,” Howe said after the game.

“I’d need to see it, I can’t sit here and give an honest opinion to that until I’ve done the work that you’ve done and looked at it.

“But knowing the player, I know there’s no malice intended there.”

The St James’ Park club will hope to convince the Football Association to overturn the 24-year-old’s suspension to ensure he can face Arne Slot’s Reds at Wembley later this month.
