It was a day of reckoning, as people who live around Joachin Chikaodi Mbonu, described it. Joachin has been in the books of the NDLEA as an alleged notorious drug baron.
His arrest was made by the agency at his mansion in Imo State, Nigeria.
The arrest was part of a targeted operation against his drug cartel, known for producing and distributing methamphetamine, locally referred to as ‘Mkpuru mmiri’.
Accompanied by his associate Kenneth Chibuike Ofoegbu, Mbonu was found in possession of 419.99 grams of methamphetamine.
Also, 750 grams of iodine, and other chemicals used in drug production, along with a pump action gun and cartridges.
The NDLEA’s special operations unit, after weeks of surveillance, traced Mbonu to his residence.
They conducted subsequent raids in Imo and Rivers states, seizing additional illicit drugs and firearms.
The agency highlighted Mbonu’s history of evading authorities in South Africa where he returned from.
In South Africa, he allegedly engaged in drug-related activities before returning to Nigeria to establish clandestine drug labs in rural areas.
In response to the arrest, the NDLEA marked two of Mbonu’s mansions in Imo State for potential forfeiture to the government.
