Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, were controversially absent from the 60th Virtual Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association.

Both were billed to speak at the conference but following the controversy surrounding their invitations and Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai’s withdrawn invitation, Wike sent the Rivers State Secretary to the State Government, while Obasanjo was a no-show.

The NBA had been pressured into withdrawing El-Rufai’s invitation on moral grounds, and responded by doing so.

It tweeted, “The National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association at its ongoing meeting resolves that the invitation to the Kaduna State Governor, H.E. Nasir el-Rufai by the 2020 Annual General Conference Planning committee be withdrawn and decision communicated to the governor.”

The decision was an unpopular one as northern lawyers kicked against the move and threatened to boycott the conference if Obasanjo and Wike remained on the roaster of Speakers.

Other speakers including Vice-President, Yemi Osibanjo and House of Representatives Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila spoke at the conference.
