Naira Redesign: Banks Wait On CBN After Supreme Court Ruling

There is this calmness that has followed the Supreme Court’s ruling on the use of old Naira notes. At the moment, the Naira redesign policy is on a dangling scale.

Those who have old notes at home are waiting for the information necessary to enable them dust them up.

Currently, stakeholders in the financial sector and banks are divided over re-issuance of the old naira notes.

On March 3, the Supreme Court in a ruling extending their legal tender status till December 31, 2023.

At the bank, it is a different story entirely.

Officials of commercial banks say they can’t commence re-issuance of the old notes until they are directed to do so by the CBN.

Meanwhile, stakeholders including bank customers, financial analysts and business owners have called for immediate re-issuance of the old naira notes in compliance with the Supreme Court.

Some banks’ officials said the banks would comply once they get a directive from CBN.

Nigerians are waiting for the CBN to speak on the the Naira Redesign and the ruling of the Supreme Court.
